Layered Curriculum

Based on current brain-imaging information, Layered Curriculum is fun and effective student-centered teaching method.  This 3-layer model of differentiated instruction encourages complex thinking and holds students highly accountable for their learning.

Units are developed in a three tier approach:

1. C Layer : : Basic foundational knowledge, understanding  The student builds on his/her current level of core information       â€‹This is where students will spend the bulk of their time and effort during the unit, this layer

must be completed before going on to the B and A layer.

      Examples of C level activities:

                            Text book reading

                            Worksheets

                            Notes

                            Memorization

                            Video watching

2. B Layer : : Application or manipulation of the information learned in the C layer  Problem solving or other higher level thinking tasks can be placed here.       This layer is optional but all are encouraged to attempt.

     Examples of B level activities:

                            Song lyric writing

                            Poster creation

                            Claymation

                            Video making

3. A Layer : : Critical Thinking and Analysis This layer requires the highest and most complex thought. Create leaders, voters.     This layer is optional and may only be worked on AFTER C and B layers have been completed.

Students who are self directed and willing to go above and beyond meeting the standard will be encouraged to attempt this layer.

     Examples of A level activities:

                        Compare/Contrast

                        Research

Integration of historical events with current events

                        Evaluative Writing
