American History summer learning

8th Grade American History - To help foster your learning throughout the summer and to prepare you for your 8th grade year, we are asking that you complete the following requirements. You will have a choice as to which level you wish to complete.

 

Requirements: Please read the following choices and decide what level works better for you as a learner. Try to push yourself, but not to a level of frustration. 

 

C Level- During the months of June, July and August, find, read, and write about two current events from two different topics in the key topics listed below that are covered in 8th grade social studies: total of 2 


B Level- During the months of June, July and August, find, read, and write about four current events from the three different topics (one will be used twice)  in the key topics listed below that are covered in 8th grade social studies: total of 4

A Level- During the months of June, July and August, find, read, and write about 6 current events from the 3 different topics (2 current events per topic) in the key topics listed below that are covered in 8th grade social studies: total of 6 

 

U.S. Government- National Government-President, Congress, court system; State Government-Governor, Senator; Local Government-City Council, School Board, Neighborhood Association.  

 

Economics- Any topic related to money, taxes, budgets, stock market, business, etc.

 

U.S. Geography- National parks, extreme weather affecting geography, landmarks, major rivers or landforms, etc. 

 

 

Use the following format for documenting each current event on an index card:

 

  1. Title of Article:

 

 2. Name of major newspaper/website.(CNN, Newseum.org, Portland Press Herald, New York Times, Wall Street Journal, etc.)

 

 3. Write three main ideas from each article using a minimum of 3 complete sentences per main idea. (Use your own words, do not copy sentences from article)

 

 4. Description of what interested you about this article or what you thought you might like to know more about.
